After years of chemical relaxers and all kinds of nasty nonsense inflicted on my hair, in 2007, I went au naturel. I did the big chop in 2008 and since then, I've been playing around with the best way to care for my natural hair. The timing couldn't have been better as it seems like 50% of the black female population was also doing the same thing and new natural hair blogs, products, stylists have sprung from the ashes of hotcombs-past.
My hair rules are as follows:
1. NO SHAMPOO
Have a period of sparse shampooing, I ditched the shampoo totally after my hairstylist told me it actually didn't need it - I could cleanse my hair with conditioner and not strip it of moisture. I've been co-washing (washing with conditioner) and recently added scalp washing with Dr. Bonner's liquid castile soap.
2. DEEP CONDITION LIKE CRAZY
I'm always experimenting with new deep conditioning methods and I'm a huge fan of the simple conditioner+olive oil+shower cap method.
3. COMB ONLY WHEN SOAKING WET (WITH H2O & CONDITIONER)
I never, ever, ever comb my hair dry or without conditioner and always just comb it out in the shower. I like to even comb with my hair under the running water, which increases "slip" exponentially.
4. MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE
Nothing can replace water when it comes to moisturizing, so my favorite products are water based and contain light, but penetrating oils. Well moisturized hair should feel light and fluffy, not greasy.
